There is no advantage to letting your pet have one litter. However, there are plenty of advantages to having your pet spayed or neutered. These advantages include decreasing the chances of breast tumors later in life, decreasing the chance of cystic ovaries and uterine infections, decreasing the desire to roam the neighborhood, decreasing the incidence of prostate cancer later in life, helping prevent spraying and marking and other behaviors associated with reproduction, and also decreases the surplus of unwanted puppies and kittens.
Is it necessary to withhold food from my pet before spay or neuter surgery?
For dogs older than 4 months of age, yes. It is important that surgery be done on an empty stomach to reduce the risk of vomiting during and after anesthesia. You will need to withhold food for at least 8 to 10 hours before surgery for dogs. Pick food dishes up at midnight the night before surgery. Water is okay. Cats do not need to fast because they are done later in the day.
Is the anesthetic used during a spay or neuter surgery safe?
Yes. Today's modern anesthetic monitors have made surgery much safer than in the past. We do a physical exam on your pet before administering anesthetics to ensure that a fever or other illness will not be a problem.
Why should I spay or neuter my pet?
Spaying is the procedure used for female pets and neutering generally refers to the procedure used for male pets. These are ways of providing birth control for dogs and cats by removing reproductive organs. Through spaying or neutering, you can help your pet have a happier, healthier, and longer life. In both cases the operation is performed while the pet is under anesthesia.
Will my pet have stitches after spay or neuter surgery?
Yes, but we use absorbable sutures underneath the skin. These do not need to be removed because they will dissolve on their own in 10 to 14 days but can take up to 3 month to fully dissolve.
